PD/1/3/15 - Western Approach, Cobourg Street, circa 1960

"It's a view many will remember, but one which didn't last long. Western Approach has been newly laid out, the tower block at North Road Station has recently been completed and North Cross Roundabout is still on the drawing board. The distinctive silhouette of Christ Church is still occupying a substantial footprint in Eton Place and on the far right the long-isolated Opporto stands on the site now occupied by the Copthorne Hotel. Between these two buildings we see, at the erstwhile junction of York Street and Cobourg Street, a number of those healthy-looking properties that were to make way for the new roundabout, the impressive three-storey premises of Reed's (Plymouth) motor car agents dominating the block facing us. The area's main Ford (and Fordson) distributors, they also had a garage at Pennnycomequick, in Saltash Road (just off Stuart Road) and a repair depot in John Lane which ran up between Reed's showroom and Coster's, which had stood on the left as we see it. To the right was the Caprera Social Club."
