Nicola Broadbent (SWiB office)
Plymouth University BA Hon Photography Student

For this module, Nicola worked with SWiB on producing her own photographic collection focusing on images of the various commemorative plaques and war memorials within the City. Upon searching through our SWiB catalogue database, Nicola opted for a selection of images from many different archive collections as inspiration for her work.

Here are some of the images she selected from the SWiB archives:

AD-8-1-33-1_Cenotaph_Plymouth.jpg PD-7-10-35.jpg PD-7-10-33.jpg

SG-1-17.jpg PD-7-10-21.jpg

pd-1-15-203.jpg RW-25-3-5.jpg WMN-3-1-2655-3.jpg

SG-1-131.jpg WMN-3-1-2655-4.jpg

Nicola's aim was to try and photograph the City's memorials from many different angles. She tried wide angle/panoramic shots, portraying the memorials surroundings, as well as getting up closer to the memorial itself. Nicola played around with depth of field to see how successfully she could highlight individual parts. Her objective was to create images that were both documentary and artistic.

Method/s used:

Wide angle/panoramic

Processed as: B/W/colour

Outcomes (collaborative benefits):

As a result of Nicola's work, the resulting archive has been deposited with SWiB alongside the collections which inspired her. For Nicola, it is hoped she will have developed a better knowledge as to how SWiB works and more generally how an archive operates as well as improving her own understanding the technical side of photography. As a long-term consequence of this project, Nicola will have created a portfolio of work which will reside at SWiB alongside other notable named photographer collections for continued public access and as a means by which Nicola can promote her work.
