This collection was deposited by Denise Bailey who found a treasure trove of pictures in a photo album among her late mothers possessions. Denise’s mother was Pamela Serpell (nee Coles) and in the collection are a lot of photographs of Pamela’s mother, Denise’s grandmother Emily Horrill and her family.

The Horrill family lived in St Budeaux having entered there via Callington and Lezant. Emily Horrill married into the Coles family while her sister, Ellen Jan Horrill, married firstly, Thomas Henry Edginton, who tragically died a few years later, and secondly William Gilhen. William was born in 1856 and took the majority of photographs featured in the collection. His stepson Richard Edginton put the album together.

A large number of the general photographs are late-Victorian (1890s, prior to William’s marriage to Emily), many are later and vividly capture the flavour of Edwardian Plymouth, the outskirts and other parts of the Country.
