Born and educated in London, Harvey Crane was a fan of the theatre since the age of eighteen when he first appeared in Hamlet with the Richard Meadows White Company, this led to many roles on both the variety and legitimate stage.
Following the Second World War he resided in Devon and became a regular contributor for 'The Western Evening Herald' and 'The Stage'.
The HC collection, deposited with the South West Image Bank in 2007, contains many of his newspaper reviews, associated programmes and photographs pertaining to productions in Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Plymouth and Cornwall.

The collection contains many of Harvey Crane's newspaper reviews, associated programmes and photographs pertaining to productions in Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Plymouth and Cornwall.
Content relates to productions featured at the Palace Theatre, Globe Theatre, Central Hall and Theatre Royal by notable local theatre companies including the Tamaritans, the Carmenians, Plymouth Amateur Dramatic Society, Plymstock Amateur Operatic Society, Plymouth Police Dramatic Society, Tavistock Amateur Operatic Society, Tecalemit Drama Group, the Presbyterian Players, Plymouth Shakspere Society, the Tavonians, and the Swarthmore Players amongst many others.
