WMN/2/1/384 Christmas Shopping, New George Street, Plymouth, 1970

"Have a good look at this and see how accurately you can date it… from the cars (mainly British - Rover, Hillman, Vauxhall, Viva, Mini, 1100 and, goodness me, a rare Mercedes), the fashions and the Christmas decorations.

We're looking up New George Street, a good few years before pedestrianisation and the Herald/Morning News move from Leicester Harmsworth House to Derriford - you can see the pre-war pitched roof of the building piercing the skyline just this side of what was then the SWEB office and showroom.

On this side of the newspaper offices Lawsons and Costers occupy the block running down towards Courtenay Street and the Co-op block. No mobile phones on the Christmas shopping lists then, or ipods, or computers, CDs, DVDs or videos, and only three channels to choose between on Christmas Day; how did people cope back in 1970?
