PD/1/8/2 - Charles Church & St Judes, circa 1962

"It's an unusual angle, looking across the rooftops towards Charles Church and, over to the far right, St Jude's Church. Our vantage-point would appear to be from somewhere on one of the upper floors of the Civic Centre building, which to some extent would help us to date this image as being post-1961.

So is it sometime in 1962 or later? Beyond the Norwich Union Building and the Post Office we see the newly-opened Turnbull's Garage, off Charles Cross roundabout, on the far right, and over to the left the GPO's Telephone Exchange building, with the old Almshouses, still standing and partly obscured, to the right and Underhill's Printing Works, in Regent Street, located directly above. The Drake Circus car park is still a decade away and in the middle distance between the two church towers, we see the shell of the erstwhile Ebrington Street Methodist Church.

There may well be other clues in here somewhere that suggest a more specific dating for the image, and certainly if the red car in the bottom right-hand corner, travelling along Exeter Street above the bus station, is (as it appears to be) an early Vuaxhall Viva, then that would give us a date of 1963 or later.
