WMN/1/1/37/6 Aerial View [section of], Old Town Street, Drake Circus, 1960s

"For the generation who are not quite sure how the old Drake Circus, with the Guinness Clock, and the new Drake Circus relate to each other, this is the perfect means to explain.

Out anchor point is the entrance to Marks and Spencer at the top of Old Town Street, little changed today but now an indoor frontage. Just above it, with its white walls basking in the sunshine, is Central Methodist Hall.

Towards the bottom of the photograph, we see the western end of Ebrington Street, the north-side not long for this world and the bottom soon to fund itself part of what would be rechristioned Eastlake Walk, once the construction of Charles Cross roundabout had cut the old Ebrington Street in two.

Curving around this side of the original and much smaller Drake Circus, we see Old Town Street turning into Tavistock Road, passing Duke Street on the left and park Street (on the Art College site) on the right as we head north, past the Revenue and up towards the Harvest Home. It's there, just below the old Technical College which stood, opposite the library
